Being a good customer

When you are shopping around for the best possible mortgage, you expect certain things from your potential lenders. Above all, you want them to be honest with you at all times. Also, you expect them to consider your needs and respond to them with the right kind of mortgage. Finally, you expect your lender to be professional, friendly and responsive to your questions throughout the process.

These are all reasonable requests, but there are some things that you, the customer, should do to streamline the process and return the favor.

First of all, realize that you will have to provide information about yourself in order to find out what kind of rates will be available to you. Lenders offer mortgages according to your income and financial history; therefore, you can’t request the lowest rate without sharing a little bit about yourself.

Additionally, you should have reasonable expectations. Mortgage processing takes time and requires patience. Don’t expect to be able to close in a few weeks. Feel free to ask your potential lender what the projected timetable is, but do not make unreasonable demands.

It is also important that you are honest and forthright when you answer questions about your finances. Even if you lie, it is almost certain that your lender will find out. (Mortgages require lenders to scrutinize your finances very carefully.) Lying wastes everyone’s time, and. Ultimately, serves no purpose.

Finally, make sure that you are responsible. While you can expect your potential lender to provide you with accurate information, it is your responsibility to listen carefully and make sure that you understand what they are saying. Take notes and ask questions.
